Many men struggle with intimacy, emotional connection, and healthy relationships without realizing these patterns may be connected to the mother wound. Early experiences of love, nurturing, and emotional safety can shape how men experience vulnerability, self-worth, connection, and their ability to receive love.

In this episode of The Alchemy of Masculinity, I explore the mother wound through psychology, mythology, and the Hero’s Journey. We examine how the mother archetype influences a man’s emotional world and how unresolved wounds can affect relationships, sexuality, validation, and self-love.

You’ll learn why men seek external validation, how emotional dependency and unconscious patterns develop, and how healing the mother wound allows men to create relationships from wholeness rather than need.

In this episode:

  •  What the mother wound is and how it affects men
  •  Childhood experiences and emotional safety
  •  The connection between mother wounds and relationships
  •  Why men seek validation through love and sex
  •  The Hero’s Journey and meeting the Goddess
  •  Emotional dependency and unconscious patterns
  •  Self-love and learning to mother yourself
  •  Integrating masculine and feminine energies
  •  Building mature relationships without projection

If you’ve struggled with intimacy, emotional dependency, or feeling incomplete without external love, this episode explores how healing the mother wound can transform the way you relate to yourself and others.

Mother vs Father Wound For man, the mother wound is significant, if not more significant, than the father wound. Because when it comes to the masculine-feminine axis, we say that the masculine is the outward expression of life, and the feminine is the inward expression of life. So when we're talking about the father wound or the father experience, symbolically speaking, we are talking about how we show up in the world. When we're talking about the mother wound or the mother experience, symbolically speaking, we're talking about the internal emotional life of the individual. So the mother wound very much has to do with how we are in relationship to ourselves, how we show up in relationship to others, and how we establish safety, connection, and intimacy between each other. The archetype of the father is about realizing personal truth and purpose in this lifetime. So it goes without saying that the mother archetype is about self-love and being able to give and receive love unconditionally. Hi, everyone. Welcome to another episode of the Alchemy of Masculinity podcast. I'm your host, Ioannis Kokkinos. Thank you for being here today. Why Bring Mother In So in the last two episodes, we unpacked the father wound as far as manhood and masculinity are concerned. Two weeks ago was about the hero's journey and the milestone of the atonement with the father. And last week, it was about the four archetypes of Kali Ma Shakti, Shiva, Kronos, and Saturn. So now, of course, I wanna bring the mother into the conversation, the mother wound specifically, and I will be tying it back to the hero's journey because there's a very significant milestone of the hero's journey that speaks to the mother, the goddess, the, um, all-loving feminine energy that exists within the universe, life, the cosmos, and within us. So as I said in the introduction, the father as a symbol is very much about the outward experience. It's about the external expression of life, and the mother archetype has very much to do with the internal expression of life. Leaving Home Archetype Now, we have a literal mother, right? When we're boys, we have the mother that we first meet, the mother that carries us inside her womb and brings us out into the world. This is our first connection and establishment with the feminine, feminine energy and mother energy. Eventually, as we grow in the household, ideally there's a father there, there's a family unit. Obviously this is not the case for every single man on this planet, But the energy of the home in general does end up falling under the umbrella of the mother. That even includes the literal father, because the father as an archetype, as a symbol, as an energy, is actually about leaving home, leaving the familiar, leaving the safe, leaving the comfortable, which falls all under the umbrella of mother, in order to go out into the world, which is the hero's journey, in order to self-realize, to discover purpose, to become one with God, the Father, the archetypal father, and also to meet the goddess, to meet the archetypal mother. Meeting Goddess Trap So how this connects to the mother wound and, you know, the hero's journey, as we can see, as the hero moves along in the hero's journey, the end of the story, the end of the hero's journey is not the meeting with the goddess. He is not supposed to end his journey or story there, because to just simply fall in love for the sake of establishing connection and intimacy and relationship before personal truth is discovered is actually the failed hero's journey. This actually just means that the hero falls under the spell of the temptress, which is the shadow expression of the goddess, which also translates to falls under the rulership of his lust because it becomes about sexual gratification, and it becomes about fulfilling some form of void, some form of self-love that is still not there because self-realization has still not occurred. We are very much conditioned to seek a partner out, to fall in love, and that's it as far as masculinity and manhood are concerned. This may well be the case for a few men. I don't wanna generalize here. But really the only way man can truly show up in relationship and in intimacy and in forming that deep connection with another human being is to discover personal truth first, is to also establish self-love first. How Mother Wound Shows So the mother wound showing up in man's life is a form of love or an expression of nurturing and safety and care that was not experienced in the early years. And we go out into the world, right? And we're seeking for that love. We're seeking for our mother's love in relationships, in sex, in connection, in pleasure, in gratification. Because remember that symbolically speaking, the feminine is also the material experience. Matter is from the Latin mater, which translates to mother. So addictions develop, compulsions, any form of pleasure at compulsive levels because we are trying to fill a certain void within ourselves because there's a wound there. There's a wound from the earlier years of life, and this could be from the literal mother, this could be from the literal father, it could be from the childhood home, it could be the family unit, the extended family, because all of that is under the umbrella of mother, because mother is the safe, the familiar, and the comfortable. So that is where we go into subconscious programming and subconscious patterning, right? We want to do subconscious healing that translates, archetypally speaking, into healing the mother wound, because our subconscious patterning has very much to do with our early years of development, our early years of life, and what was once upon a time familiar, safe, and comfortable. Now I am using the word safe a lot, but just because something feels safe does not mean that that's good for us, and that is where personal truth has to come into the equation to discover what is actually our truth and what is for us and what is not for us. So that is why the hero must go on the hero's journey and not stop at the milestone of the meeting with the goddess. He must continue onward after he receives this reflection of unconditional love. Because when the hero, let's say, is tempted and does not succumb to his lust, he passes this test of the meeting with the goddess. Because the goddess will come as a form of lover, right? Because we're not boys, we are men going on this hero's journey psychically speaking. Psychic Hero Journey So we could see the hero's journey as a psychic cycle. Yes, we go out into the world, yes, we go traveling, yes, we go into the unknown, but this is all in within the psyche. So before the meeting with the goddess inside man's psyche, he's actually still carrying boy consciousness. So when he meets the goddess, it's actually his inner boy that will seek the love of the mother, and that boy is on his way to becoming a man, right? Biologically, he's a man, but psychically speaking, he also has to become a man. And how does boy become man? By facing his sexual energy, by facing his sexual fire. So the goddess is going to reflect all of that because the goddess will always be the mother to the boy, but the goddess will also eventually have to become lover to the man. But the man can only ever truly unite with the goddess once he realizes who he is, what his purpose is, and atones with the father. Self Love Before Atonement There's a reason why the milestone of atonement with the father happens after the meeting with the goddess, because the father in this case, just like I explained two weeks ago, is atoning with that love that is outside of us or that we perceive as outside of us and is challenging us, is instilling adversity in our life, is manifesting tough situations in order to rise, in order to grow, in order to strengthen. And that is how that perceived separation between me versus God closes, because we do want to become one with God, and it starts from within ourselves. But that atonement with the Father can only happen when we realize that self-love exists within us through compassion, empathy, nurturing, feeling safe within our body. That is the mother's love. That is the feminine's love. Because eventually, as men, we do not want to seek out our mother's love in our lovers. And if you are a homosexual or bisexual man listening to this, just apply the same symbolism to your external partners because relationship is established through feminine energy. So for heterosexual men who are seeking women, who are seeking a romantic partner in life, that woman cannot be a projection of his mother wound because self-love does not exist. Eventually, man will have to also mother himself in order to heal that mother wound, and that is what the meeting of the goddess on the hero's journey will reflect. The meeting of the goddess in the hero's journey is to reflect that there's an all-loving, all-nurturing force that exists out in the world, right? We go out into the world to meet the father, to leave the safe, familiar, and comfortable behind, which is the mother, and we go into the unknown, but here we encounter another form of mother. We encounter a love that is not about the safe, the familiar, and comfortable. And yes, potentially she is to become lover, but if there's a mother wound that is alive within the hero, then the goddess will actually be a projection of the hero's mother wound and the goddess will teach the hero that he has to go within himself in order to find that love, in order to remember that love. Codependency and Love Within Because no matter what we go through, no matter what we experience in our lifetime, love is always within us. Like, love is not something to be chased or acquired or achieved. Like, we are born from love, we live in love, and we will die in love, and we will continue on into love after we leave our bodies. But because of our conditioning, our programming, our traumas, what we go through, we think that love does not exist or love is something that needs to be won over or achieved or chased, right? This is why codependency exists, why a lot of relationships fail, because there's a lot of, like, seeking and hungering and thirsting from the other person. But that is actually a reflection of lacking self-love. Because if we don't have self-love, we have nothing. If we don't have self-love, we don't have relationships. If we don't have self-love, we cannot foster and nurture romance or friendship or even connections with our family members And that all has to do with the mother wound. And again, this is not about the literal mother, although it can be, but mother as a symbol, as an archetype which falls under all that was familiar and comfortable and programmed from the early years of life. So when we leave all of that onto the hero's journey and we experience this expression of love outside of us, because atonement with the Father is to also experience love, but it's a different, right? Masculine love and feminine love are different. When we say feminine, we need to think of internal. When we say masculine, we need to think of external. But we are on the hero's journey, so we are already in the external environment. We've left home. We've left the familiar. We've left mother. But here is the goddess. Here is the divine feminine that is outside of the home to remind us that the love we are seeking already exists within us. So when we meet the goddess, we experience self-love, we experience internal love, and then when we atone with the father, we experience external love, but through challenge, through growth, through adversity. Hero Journey Comes Full Circle And then that just comes full circle. That comes full circle, and that is why the hero's journey is depicted as a circle. There's the leaving of home and the returning to home, right? We go back to the beginning because we've acquired something, we've retrieved something, we've reclaimed something. And that completion of the hero's journey also integrates the union of the masculine and the feminine, the integration of the masculine and the feminine within, and then that gets to be reflected on the outside. It is only when the hero goes back to the completion point, to the origin point, once the hero's journey is done, that he can come into union with an external lover, because he's no longer a boy. He's no longer a teenager infatuated and seduced by his inner lust. Because that boy consciousness needs to die and needs to evolve and needs to transform into man consciousness. Sexual Energy Initiation And the bridge between the boy and the man consciousness is the teen. And what happens when we become teenagers? We face our sexual energy. We face our sexual fire. So our sexual energy has very much to do with the transformation of child consciousness and into adult consciousness. Because children have absolutely no business being anywhere near sex, right? That sexual energy is matured, is developed, and is the instinct to unite with another human being in order to create life. That sexual energy exists as creative energy in children, but obviously there's no instinct there to unite with another human being, because it's not developed, it's not matured. That creative energy for the child allows it to draw, to paint, to run, to emote, to feel, to create, right? Children are constantly creating. So then as we move into adolescence, that creative energy is what initiates us into our adulthood, because that creative energy needs to transform into sexual energy, which is creative energy for the adult to create life, to create a baby, or to keep creating in their own life through businesses and art and music and building homes and all sorts of creative endeavors. Wrap Up and Healing So just to wrap this all up, the meeting of the goddess milestone tells us and teaches us that we cannot stop there just because we have found an external person in order to share relationship with. That can only or should only happen when the hero's journey is completed, when we discover personal truth, when we discover who we truly are. Because it's only when we've established that sense of self, when we know who we are, I know who I am. So because I know who I am, I know what I can offer and bring into a relationship, and I know what I can receive. I know what I'm worth receiving, right? That reciprocation of offering and receiving, which is the nature of coming into a relationship with someone else, can only happen when purpose and personal truth are discovered. And that is how eventually the masculine, the feminine unite, and that is how eventually man can meet a lover that is outside of him and is not a projection of the mother's love that was missing throughout his life. Because to heal that mother wound is to realize that love does exist, that being able to mother yourself is being able to hold compassion and empathy and to nurture the younger parts of you that didn't receive what they needed to receive once upon a time.
